Song Idea - Alanis Morisette "Perfect"

Post  Katie on Wed Sep 17, 2008 4:52 pm

She made a really awesome acoustic version of her Jagged Little Pill album about a year ago and this song is so great on it.

Maybe it's too soon to put a song together for this week, but I think it could be really good. Plus I think Michelle singing Alanis would be rockin' Wink

Lyrics:
Sometimes is never quite enough
If you're flawless, then you'll win my love
Don't forget to win first place
Don't forget to keep that smile on your face

Be a good boy
Try a little harder
You've got to measure up
And make me prouder

How long before you screw it up
How many times do I have to tell you to hurry up
With everything I do for you
The least you can do is keep quiet

Be a good girl
You've gotta try a little harder
That simply wasn't good enough
To make us proud

I'll live through you
I'll make you what I never was
If you're the best, then maybe so am I
Compared to him compared to her
I'm doing this for your own damn good
You'll make up for what I blew
What's the problem...why are you crying

Be a good boy
Push a little farther now
That wasn't fast enough
To make us happy
We'll love you just the way you are
If you're perfect

Katie

Wow. I love this...can we sing "screwed up:" in church?

I think this would definitely spin the service. This is speaking directly at parents who are pushing kids to be something they may not be. We would have to be really really careful, or come from the angle of the world pushing us to be perfect. But wow. I think this is powerful.

Acceptance

Post  Curran on Tue Sep 23, 2008 4:55 pm

Beautiful song Katie. I'm preaching from Philippiana 3:4b-14 and will pick up on your themes of real acceptance. Anything that shows the difference between real acceptance and fake acceptance would help. My experience is that people who really feel loved/accepted are peaceful. Those who are still pretending to be something they aren't work very hard to pretend and usually keep others at arms length. They are often described by others as 'angry, controlling, judgmental'. See what youall can find.

I've heard a pastor say "screwed up", so I guess it's okay.

Yeah, I have no qualms with it. I really like the song, and with Curran on board, I think we should give it a whirl.

'screwed up'

Post  Curran on Wed Sep 24, 2008 2:09 pm

I am screwed up. I have no issue with the phrase in the song. Most of us are hiding some area we feel afraid of or ashamed of or are in stubborn denial about. It's what we do with it that matters. Real acceptance doesn't mean we are perfect. It means we are loved, forgiven, and being moulded by a God who loves us. Any luck on finding a video clip/skit that demonstates the tension?

Another song...?

Post  Michelle on Thu Sep 25, 2008 1:22 pm

This is a song that I wrote last night. What are your thoughts on it instead of the Alanis song?

You can listen to it here. (This is a very rough recording I made myself...)

Lyrics:

Title: Closer

Verse 1:
I know your weary soul feels broken
You wonder if you'll be fine tomorrow
Don't buy the line that you deserve this
Don't feed the lie that you're not worth it (you're worth it)

Chorus:
Because
You've seen greater things and
You've held greater dreams and
Though they seem far away
They're closer than you could know

Verse 2:
The darkness is deeper than you'll speak of
As you try to hold the pain inside
Don't buy the line that you must fight alone
Don't feed the lie that you're too far from hope (I'll hope for you)

Bridge:
Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
Daisy, Daisy I gave my life for you
It won't be a stylish marriage
But I'll never let go of you

Chorus 2:
Because
I see greater things and
I hold better dreams
Though I seem far away

Another wow. Beautiful song Michelle. I could see this this coming week as well with Security. I like them both. I like the tension from the Alanis Morissette song, and I like the "I've seen greater things" response of God in your song.

Amazing song Michelle. I needed to hear this today. You really spoke to me. I like Jason's idea of doing it this week with security. That's my personal feeling on it and what I took from the song. Tonight is only 5 hours and 45 minutes away! lol!

Sounds good- we will do that this week. I would like to keep the John Mayer song in mind for the Hope Lives series.
